Janet Hunter

Obituary of Janet Eileen Hunter

Please share a memory of Janet to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

February 19, 1951 - April 24, 2024

Janet Hunter passed away peacefully with her husband, sons and close family by her side on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the age of 73 years.

Janet will be forever remembered and loved by her husband: Robert “Bob” or “Butch” Hunter; sons: Sheldon (Leslie) of Shilo; Jared (Natasha) of Australia; Brenden (Chelsea) of Calgary; grandchildren: Aurora, Russell, Lewis, Walter, and Gilbert; brother: Lorne Mertz; sister-in-law: Beatrice Campbell; as well as countless other relatives and friends.

Janet was predeceased by her parents: Waldemar (Wally) (January 8, 2008) and Rose (April 18, 2016) Mertz.

Janet was born in Edmonton.  Janet first met Robert while going to NAIT.  They married in 1971.   They moved to Spruce Grove, before moving to Calgary in 1978.  In 1980, they then moved back to Spruce Grove before moving again to Bonnyville in 1987.  Over that time, Janet accumulated a wide and coveted group of friends with whom she loved to share time and keep close.  She always valued family and reunions with them of any kind.  She would often tell stories about the Oil Wives, times at the lake camping and her other travels (from Pigeon Lake to Australia).  She even survived a Class 4 rafting adventure in Costa Rica.

To honour Janet’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held.  Donations to Haying in the 30s (Mallaig) would be preferred in lieu of flowers.  Due to treatments made possible by such charities, Janet successfully fought cancer for more than 10 years.  The family would like to sincerely thank the dedicated treatment teams that cared for her along the way, especially those most recently at the Bonnyville Health Centre.  A celebration of her life will be held in July west of Edmonton.

Respectfully submitted by the Hunter family
